Operating System Support Lifecycle

To improve efficiency and to promote good security hygiene, Louisiana Tech IT only supports operating systems that are supported by their respective vendor with at least security updates. Operating systems that are at the end of their lifetime and do not receive security updates, as a general rule, may not be used for general computing devices. Exceptions may be made, at the discretion of departmental IT coordinators, for a small number of machines based on legitimate need to support legacy software and hardware.

Emerging – A pre-release or newly released operating system that has not been approved for deployment on university systems, but is expected to be deployed at a later date after testing.

Current – This platform is fully supported by ITT; however, may not be installed by default.

Baseline – This operating system release is fully supported by IIT and serves as the default for new deployments. Any older configurations should be upgraded to this point when they have reached retirement.

Containment – This platform is supported by IIT and will maintained in place. Upgrades to baseline will be performed only on user request or to resolve other technical issues.

Retirement – This platform is nearing end of life (less than one year remaining of support) and must be updated to the baseline to continue receiving IIT support.

End of Life – This platform is no longer supported and must be updated to the baseline platform to be eligible for IIT support. Systems incapable of being upgraded to baseline must be dispositioned and replaced.
