Operating System Support Lifecycle

Overview

To improve efficiency and to promote good security hygiene, Louisiana Tech IT only supports operating systems that are supported by their respective vendor with at least security updates. Operating systems that are at the end of their lifetime and do not receive security updates, as a general rule, may not be used for general computing devices. Exceptions may be made, at the discretion of departmental IT coordinators, for a small number of machines based on legitimate need to support legacy software and hardware.

Support Status Definitions

Emerging – Operating system has been recently announced or released, but has not been tested or approved for use on university systems. Support is expected in the future.

Baseline – Operating system receives regular updates and is fully supported by IIT and serves as default for new deployments.

Supported – Operating system receives regular updates is fully supported for use by IIT.

Retirement – Operating system is nearing end of life (less than one year remaining of support), and may receive security updates only. Upgrade to a supported operating system should be scheduled when convenient.

End of Life – Operating system is no longer supported and does not receive updates. Systems running end of life operating systems must be updated to a supported operating system. Systems incapable of being upgraded to a supported operating system must be replaced.
