How to setup a Tech email on your phone.

For students:

iPhone Setup (As of iOS 15.5):

  1. Tap on the “Settings” icon on the iPhone home screen.
  2. Scroll down until you find the “Mail” tab and tap it. 
  3. Tap the “Accounts” tab.
  4. Then tap the “Add Account” tab in the middle of the page.
  5. Select “Google” from the list.
  6. This will prompt you to sign in with your google account(s)
  7. Put in your tech email formatted as: “abc123@email.latech.edu”
  8. Click Next and you will be taken to a Louisiana Tech CAS Login page.
  9. In the “Username” field, enter your 6-character Tech username (e.g. abc123)
  10. In the “Password” field, enter your Tech password (same one used for Moodle, WiFi or webmail).
  11. Click Login.
  12. If prompted, enter your MFA token from Google Authenticator and name the device (Student Workers only)
  13. Mail, Contacts & Calendar should be “On”. Notes should be “Off”.
  14. Optional: You can change the Description from “abc123@email.latech.edu” to something like “Louisiana Tech Email” with these steps:
  1. Tap the Account named “abc123@email.latech.edu” (abc123 will be your 6-character Tech username).
  2. Tap “abc123@email.latech.edu”
  3. In the “Description” field, enter a description of the email account (e.g. “Louisiana Tech Email”).
  4. Tap “Done” in the upper right corner.
  5. Open Apple Mail to test and ensure that your mail is working.

Android setup (As of Android 12):

  1. Install the Gmail app from the Google Play store, if it is not already installed.
  2. When viewing your personal email’s inbox (Android devices usually have you sign in with a personal Google account when first setup, thus automatically signing in your personal Gmail in the Gmail app.) press the 3 horizontal lines in the top left corner of the screen and scroll down to “Settings” then tap it.
  3. Select “Add Account”
  4. Select “Google” when the “Set up Email” prompt shows.
  5. Complete a security pin/fingerprint if setup
  6. Type in your full Louisiana Tech email formatted as abc123@email.latech.edu
  7. Once the CAS login screen pulls up sign in using your username (abc123) and your Moodle password
  8. Put in an MFA token from Google Authenticator if setup and name the device as you please.
  9. Go back to your inboxes and your Tech email should be present, it may take a moment to sync every email.
  10. If your personal email’s inbox is still on your main screen click your profile icon in the top right corner of the screen and select your Tech email and it will switch and vise versa.

For Faculty:

iPhone Setup (As of iOS 15.5):

  1. Tap on the “Settings” icon on the iPhone home screen.
  2. Scroll down until you find the “Mail” tab and tap it. 
  3. Tap the “Accounts” tab.
  4. Tap “Add Account” in the middle of the page.
  5. Tap the “Other” button at the bottom of the page.
  6. Tap the “Add Mail Account” tab
  7. In the “Name” field fill out your first and last name.
  8. In the “Email” field, enter your entire Tech email address (e.g. “abc123@latech.edu” or “faculty@latech.edu”)
  9. In the “Password” field, enter your Tech password (same as used for Moodle, WiFi or webmail). 
  10. In the “Description” field, enter a description of the email account (e.g. “Louisiana Tech Email”).
  11. Tap “Next” in the upper right corner.
  12. Select “IMAP” at the top of the page.
  13. Name, Email, and Description fields should be filled from the previous step; you may change them now, if needed.
  14. In the “Incoming Mail Server” section:
  15. In the “Host Name” field, type: “mail.latech.edu”
  16. In the “Username” field, type your username – the first part of your email address before the ‘@’ symbol (e.g.: “abc123” or “faculty”).
  17. In the “Password” field, enter your Tech password.
  18. In the “Outgoing Mail Server” section:
  19. In the “Host Name” field, type: “smtp.latech.edu”
  20. In the “Username” field, type your username – the first part of your e-mail address before the ‘@’ symbol (e.g.: “abc123” or “faculty”).
  21. In the “Password” field, enter your Tech password.
  22. Tap “Next” in the upper right corner.
  23. IMPORTANT NOTE: Do not leave the username and password fields blank under the outgoing mail server section. Though iOS says these are “optional,” they are required in the Louisiana Tech email environment.
  1. On the “IMAP” screen turn on the Mail function. Leave Notes turned off.
  2. Tap “Save” in the upper-right corner.
  3. You should see a message indicating that the account has been added, and it should show up in your accounts list.
  4. Open Apple Mail and test to ensure that your mail is working.

Android setup (As of Android 12):

  5. Select “Personal (IMAP)”
  6. Switch username to not include the “@latech.edu” portion
  7. Put in your faculty Moodle password
  8. When the next screen with “Server” pops up put “mail.latech.edu”
  9. “Port” should be “993”
  10. “Security Type” should be “SSL/TLS (accepts all certificates)”
  11. When the “Outgoing” settings pop up for “Server” put “smtp.latech.edu”
  12. Click “next” and then click “next” again on the “Account Options” screen
  13. Your account is setup! Name the account to your liking and put your full name under “Your Name” for recipients to know who you are.
  14. Go back to your inboxes and your faculty Tech email should be present, it may take a moment to sync every email.
  15. If your personal email’s inbox is still on your main screen click your profile icon in the top right corner of the screen and select your Tech email and it will switch to that account’s inboxes and vice versa.
