If you are new to using Zoom, try to keep some of these tips in mind to improve your Zoom experience.
- Be aware of your microphone. Microphones pick up not only the noise you make but noise in the environment as well. An open mic can quickly become distracting for a class, so try to keep it muted unless you need to speak.
- Be aware of your camera.Try to keep in mind when your camera is active and what it will pick up. Webcams provide your instructor and classmates with a view into your home. When people forget about an active webcam, embarrassing moments can happen.
- Dress appropriately. You should dress appropriately for a class meeting if you plan to share a camera feed with your class.
- Do not say or do anything you would not want to be recorded. Even if your instructor is not recording your meeting, other students can (even when Zoom recordings are disabled). You should act like you would if you were in public in the classroom.
- Let other people in your home know you are going to be in a meeting. The Internet is full of “Zoom fails,” where a video-conference is interrupted by unknowing household members making too much noise or wearing too little clothing.
- Keep backgrounds appropriate. Virtual backgrounds are a fun feature that allows some creativity with Zoom meetings. Just be sure that your background is appropriate for a class meeting.
- Remember your Netiquette. Netiquette applies to Zoom meetings just like it does elsewhere online.
