Gmail Accounts in Outlook

This article explains how to set up your student Tech gmail account in Outlook 2010. It is currently a work in progress.

  1. Login to your Google mail account.
  2. Click on the gear picture, and choose Settings.


  3. Click on the Forwarding and POP/IMAP tab at the top.
  4. Click Disable POP.
  5. Click Enable IMAP. Your screen should look similar to the one below:


  6. Click Save Changes.
  7. Open Outlook.
  8. Click File, then Add Account.
  9. Choose Manually configure server settings or additional server types. Click Next.
  10. Leave the Internet E-mail option checked, and click Next.
  11. Fill in your name.
  12. Your email address will be abc123@email.latech.edu, where abc123 is your student account.
  13. We recommend changing the account type to IMAP. To see the difference, see this article.
  14. Change the incoming mail server to imap.gmail.com.
  15. Change the outgoing mail server to smtp.gmail.com.
  16. Type in your username (including @email.latech.edu) and password. Your screen should look similar to the following:


  17. Click More Settings....
  18. Click the Outgoing Server tab. Click the My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication checkbox and select Use same settings as my incoming mail server.
  19. Click the Advanced tab.
  20. Change the Use the following type of encrypted connection dropbox to SSL.  Change the Incoming server (IMAP) port to 993.


  21. Change the Use the following type of encrypted connection dropbox to TLS.  Change the Outgoing server (SMTP) to 587.
  22. Click OK.
  23. Click Next.
  24. Your account should now be created.
