Secure Wireless Connection in Windows 8/7/Vista (WPA2) Print E-mail

The university employs an WPA2 wireless network throughout campus. In order to configure the secure wireless network, please ensure that you have the following:

  • 128-bit encryption wireless network card 
 UPDATE: For Windows 8 machines with Intel 7260 (or other Intel) cards having connection issues
1) Right-click on the Intel Card in the Device Manager and select "properties"
2) Then click on "advanced" tab.
3) Look for an option called "Wireless Mode." Set the mode from 802.11a/b/g to just 802.11b/g or prefer 2.4GHz.
You can now download and run the program  LaTechWPA2.exe  to autoconfigure your connection.  After running, you may need to click on the created LaTechWPA2 wireless network and select "Connect." 


1. Right click the internet connection in the task bar and select Open Network and Sharing Center.




2. Click on Set up a new connection or network.  (Vista Users: This link will be in the left-hand side panel)




3. Select Manually connect to a wireless network. Click Next.




4. In this window enter the following:

  •     Network name : LaTechWPA2
  •     Security type : select WPA2-Enterprise
  •     Encryption type will automatically select AES (this is correct). 

Click Next.




5. In the next window click Change connection settings.




6. In the next window select the Security tab. Uncheck Remember my credentials for this connection each time I'm logged on. Click Advanced Setting. In the authentication selection click "User Authentication." Have them enter their Tech username and password. This is the same username and password for Moodle and Webmail. and click Settings. (Vista Users: Uncheck Cache user information for subsequent connections to this network)





7. In the next window uncheck the following:

  • Uncheck Validate server certificate (Windows 8 users: Uncheck Verify the server's identity by validating the certificate)
  • Uncheck Enable Fast Reconnect

Make sure Secured Password (EAP-MSCHAP v2) is selected and click Configure...




8. In the next window ensure that Automatically use my Windows logon name and password box is unchecked.




9. Click OK all the way back out.


10. A box should appear above the task bar. Click it. (If this box does not appear, click on the
internet connection in the task bar, select LaTechWPA2and click connect)




11. Enter your LaTech username and password and click OK.




You should now be connected to the LaTechWPA2 Secured Wireless network.
